Qikiqtarjuaq is a very traditional community located just off the east coast of Baffin Island. It was formerly known as Broughton Island and although the Inuktitut name for the island is “the big island,” it is actually only 12 km wide by 16 km long. An abundance of marine mammals can be found in the area, including polar bears, walrus, seals, and whales. The community is located at the northern edge of the famous Auyuittuq National Park, which offers a range of activities, including hiking and backcountry camping, ski touring, visiting fiords, and climbing the park's challenging peaks. A variety of tours and outfitters are available to assist visitors.
Potential non-renewable resources in the region include: iron, gold, and diamonds.
